Love's Fire

"Love's Fire: Fresh Numbers by Seven American Playwrights" is a series of short works inspried by Shakespeare's sonnets, for which William Finn wrote Painting You, inspired by Sonnett 102. The other pieces were written by Eric Bogosian, John Guare, Tony Kushner, Marsha Norman, Ntozake Shange and Wendy Wasserstein, with original music by William Finn, Chico Freeman, and Adam Guettel. It played at the Newman Theater at the Joseph Papp Publich Theater from June 19, 1998 through July 5, 1998, presented by the Acting Company.

"Love's Fire" was directed by Mark Lamos. Sets were by Michael Yeargan, costumes by Candice Donnelly, lighting by Robert Wierzel, sound by John Gromada, and choreography by Dyane Harvery. Anne Catteneo was dramaturge and Elizabeth Smith was voice and speech consultant.

The actors were: Jason Alan Carvell, Stephen DeRosa, James Farmer, Hamish Linklater, Daniel Pearce, Heather Robison, Jennifer Rohn, Erika Rolfsrud and Lisa Tharps.

In Finn's piece, Painting You, a painter, played by Stephen DeRosa, considers the impossibility of capturing his beloved, played by Jason Alan Carvell, in art.
